A weekend in Delray, FL: The 2017 Sales Incentive Trip

Each year Kenseal recognizes high performing sales team members with a sales incentive trip. The 2017 trip was held March 2nd-5th at The Seagate Hotel & Spa in Delray Beach, FL. The beautiful resort was a perfect location to provide relaxation and sunshine as we finish out the winter and head into busy season.

28 of our top sales associates from 2016 attended the trip. Upon their arrival on Thursday, they enjoyed a welcome dinner at a local beach restaurant to kick off the festivities.

On Friday morning the group split up and had the choice of chasing sailfish in the Atlantic Ocean, playing a round of golf at the Seagate Golf Club or embarking on a jet ski tour. The fishing group found very rough seas, but that did not stop them from reeling in some brag-worthy catches!  The jet skiers enjoyed hitting the open water for a few hours and the golfers had a relaxing day on the challenging green.

Following the morning activities, the group returned back to the Seagate Beach Club for an awards dinner to recognize individual sales achievements from the previous year in a variety of categories. A few of the noteworthy accomplishments include:

  • Branch of the Year: Charlotte
  • Salesperson of the Year: Bill Lineburg
  • Sales Manager of the Year: Sam Fagan
  • Inside Sales Team of the Year: Long Island City Inside Team

A total of 8 awards were presented that evening, congratulations to all of the recipients!

On the final full day of the trip, the group hit the beach to partake in a variety of beach games and a little friendly competition. Despite the wind, beach volleyball, spikeball, ladderball and more were all a huge hit!

Overall, the event was a great success and a memorable experience for all! Everyone had a great time and reflected on their hard work and dedication from the previous year. Best of luck to our sales team in the race for next year’s sales incentive trip!

Branch Spotlight: Beltsville

Located right outside of our nation’s capital, Kenseal Beltsville has accomplished so much since its opening in 1984. It all began with Mike Blair, the current manager of Kenseal Beltsville, making calls to potential customers in the Washington metropolitan area in May of that year. It was a grassroots effort – started by selling product out of his car from our former West Orange, NJ office. Fast forward a few months to later that summer when Bill Lineburg (now a Senior Account Manager out of Kenseal Chantilly) joined the team and helped open a location on Bacon Drive, across from our current warehouse. After many successful years in Beltsville, Kenseal expanded yet again in the greater DC area with a location in Chantilly, VA.

From Parkway Drive to the Capitol’s Dome, the Beltsville team has supported some monumental projects in Washington DC and the surrounding areas. Let’s learn more about the Beltsville team and hear about some of their favorite projects and accomplishments:

Mike Blair, Sales Manager: As the Sales Manager for Beltsville, Mike has supported his team to achieve many successes throughout the years. “My biggest accomplishment at Kenseal has been developing and retaining a great team, who are the best guys to go to battle with each day! Being able to work with my team to help them be successful and grow professionally so they can achieve their personal goals. We work very hard for our customers and they can’t put a price on that value!”

Brant Hoeflich, Operations Manager: “The most satisfying aspect my job would have to be the awesome team that we have and the camaraderie that we enjoy. We spend more time together than we do with our families. That goes out beyond Beltsville as well. I have family up and down the coast. Many of us have spent decades together learning, teaching and pushing each other to be the best at what we do. It amazes me the level of trust that we have with each other. I can’t say enough about them. It starts at the top and goes right down the line to the most recent hire. We expect nothing more than 100% all the time. Our families deserve it.”

Ben Delisle, Outside Sales: Ben was able to work on the United States Capitol Dome when it was undergoing renovations. Due to its age, this symbol of American democracy and architectural icon is subject to cracks and other deficiencies. Restoring the Dome ensures it can safely serve future generations of visitors and employees as the roof of the Capitol. Ben utilized his product expertise and market knowledge to provide our customer with MasterSeal NP1, backer rod, and bond breaker tape.

Craig Flater, Outside Sales: “Between 2006-2008, we worked on a China Embassy job, and I got to work with three separate Chinese contractors, mostly through translators, which made it an incredibly interesting cultural experience. More recently, I’ve been involved in the CSX Tunnel project with Andiemac Waterproofing. The job is still ongoing with phase 2 mobilizing in April 2017.”

Ted Branthover, Outside Sales: Ted supported multiple components of construction on the new MGM National Harbor, located about 10 miles outside of Washington, DC. The resort includes a 24 story hotel tower, 3,600 slot machines, 160 table games, a theater, 234 hotel rooms, 12 restaurants headed by notable chefs, retail space, and more. Ted worked closely with valued Kenseal customers to provide materials for the foundation waterproofing, roofing, and expansion joints.

The Inside Sales Team includes Allyn Bonney, Johnny Lang, Frank Napagal, and Cedric Slye have had the opportunity to work on some awesome projects together– one of which is the Jehovah’s Witness Kingdom Hall. Allyn tells us he, “watched in amazement as the building went up. The fellow Parishioners scurried about every day busily learning as they worked. They only broke for meals which they all ate together. I never ceased to be amazed at the work accomplished by people devoted to working toward a common goal. And all for free. Many took time off their regular jobs to work at the Hall. Once it was under roof, the inside had a lot of detailed aspects to it and to think it all had been done by volunteers was amazing.”

Women in Construction

March 5th-11th marks Women in Construction (WIC) Week! The focus of WIC Week is to highlight women as a visible component of the construction industry.

As reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2014 women in the U.S. earned on average 82.1 percent what men earned. However, the gender pay gap was much narrower in the construction industry with women earning an average 93.4 percent of a male colleague’s salary. The Bureau further reported 9,813,000 total people were working in construction in 2014 – only 8.9 percent of which were women.

With the demand for construction workers growing at an all-time high, construction management is looking to hire talented men and women to fulfill the growing need. According to Construct Tech, women who are working in the construction industry today are proving they are leaders who recognize the challenges on the job site. They are a catalyst  for change driving forward technology initiatives related to building information modeling, enterprise-resource planning, cloud, mobile, and so much more. They add unique value to the job site and provide innovative insight to move a project forward.

Women In Construction Week provides an occasion to raise awareness of the opportunities available for women in the construction industry and to emphasize the growing role of women in the field. We admire and value all women in the business and we thank our Kenseal team of passionate, strong women for their hard work and dedication!

Master Builders Solutions’ Enershield® Product Highlight

Kenseal Philadelphia was fortunate enough to host the Master Builders Solutions by BASF’s Enershield® wet wall demonstration. This air and water resistive barrier is based on four main concepts:

  1. Efficient use of premium materials: Delivers high performance at low film thicknesses. Low wet-film thickness results in fast drying times, allowing contractors to complete their work quickly, and minimizing potential damage to the membrane before it has fully cured.
  2. One air barrier material for all wall systems:  Creates a seamless air/water-resistive barrier and flashing system for all walls on your project. Air barriers, by their nature, must be continuous, with flexible and airtight connections to adjacent systems.  The most effective way to maintain a continuous air barrier from a practical perspective is to use one air barrier material for all wall assemblies. This minimizes the need to transition from one air barrier material to another, saving time and eliminating a potential source of air leakage.
  3. Extensive testing to validate performance: Testing by the ASTM E2357 Air Leakage of Air Barrier Assemblies demonstrates that Enershield® provides air barrier performance superior to Air Barrier Association of America (ABAA) requirements.
  4. Safety and sustainability: Composed of water-based, low-VOC materials; they are non-flammable and single-component materials, no mixing is required on the jobsite, and exothermic chemical reactions will not occur.

The demonstration combined classroom learning with hands-on instruction and focused on understanding critical details, application methods and site safety best practices. The workshop covered assessment of field conditions, the pre-construction meeting, surface preparation, proper detailing, product application and troubleshooting.

Branch Spotlight: Folcroft

Established in 1999, Kenseal Folcroft expanded our footprint in Northern Delaware, South Jersey and Pennsylvania. Chris Lippmann, Kenseal’s now Business Development Manager, opened and managed the facility in its early days. Located less than one mile from the Philadelphia city line, it is easily accessible and situated within a major artery into Delaware County. In 2015, Kenseal’s southern New Jersey location combined with our Folcroft facility. This move allowed us to bring our Philly team under one roof and increase our efficiency to support our customers’ needs. Over the next year, we expanded our warehouse space by 4,000 sq. ft., underwent an office renovation, gained a delivery vehicle, installed a loading dock and increased our outside storage area. This location has transformed into a top notch facility over the last 15+ years – come visit us today!

Our people are the foundation of our success. Learn more about the Folcroft team below:

Joe McNichol, Branch Operations Manager: I was born in Philadelphia, but grew up spending summers at the Jersey shore in Avalon. Being a beach bum, I enjoy basically anything to do with the water, such as boating, fishing, swimming, and surfing. For me, what tops being at the beach is having a family and being a good father to my twins, which has been my biggest accomplishment.

Tim Mullowney, Inside Sales: Originally I’m from Long Island, New York, but I like living in Philadelphia! One of my favorite things to do is hang out with my girlfriend at museums here. I also enjoy photography and spending time with my dog. My biggest accomplishment has been assisting in the rescue of over a dozen dogs but one day, I hope that I will be able to visit every continent, publish a novel, and master SXe.

Orlando Jones, Inside Sales: I’m originally from Maryland but, relocated to Pennsylvania. In my spare time, I am an avid and competitive gamer. I’m playing DotA2, Starcraft 2, GW2, and Overwatch at the moment. My greatest accomplishment is winning a battle against being afraid of change. Now, I have a new place, new fiance, a new job, and a new outlook on life.

TJ Krautzel, Material Handler: I was born and raised in Philadelphia, where I still love to spend time with my family. Being from Philadelphia means watching and cheering for all their sports teams! I also enjoy fishing and crabbing whenever I get the chance!

Chris Hopkins, Sales Associate: I’m proud to call DELCO (an area of Philly) my hometown, where I enjoy going to different sporting events and cheering for all of Philadelphia’s teams! I also love spending time with loved ones and going to the beach in the summertime to fish. I would love to travel around, especially to Normandy, France, all throughout Yellowstone National Park, and ski in Sweden, but my biggest accomplishment has been getting a football scholarship to college and actually graduating!

Tad Van Zoren, Delivery Driver: I’ve lived in different parts of California for well over a decade before moving to New Jersey where I spend time with my wife Susan. In my spare time, I like to exercise our two rescue dogs, a Field Springer & a Whipador, as well as maintain a well established garden with flora and fauna dating to the early 1900’s. During each season, I enjoy doing different sports: long distance swimming in the summer months, bike riding in the spring and fall months, and Masters Alpine ski racing in the winter months.

Ian Redd, Sales Manager: I am from College Park, MD and really enjoy playing video games, watching movies, going to car shows and my all time favorite thing to do is build car projects. One day I hope to go to SEMA, build & own a 700+ horsepower car, and become an amateur drag racer. I would also love to travel to every continent in the world (except Antarctica). Fun fact- I once was in a metal band and played in front of 2,000+ people.

Scott Baeschlin, Sales Manager: My greatest accomplishment is the invaluable experience I’ve gained through working with many great people; and, one of the most satisfying aspects of my job is when I see others achieve results through the journey we take together. My greatest treasures are faith and my family are my– it’s through both of these that my life has been shaped into what it is today. Fun fact- I was a waiter and serving the past President of Kenseal dinner when he handed me his business card. Within a few weeks I secured my first position with Kenseal as a credit associate!

Our Teams at World of Concrete

World of Concrete celebrated its 43rd anniversary this year with its largest show to date – 700,000 square feet of exhibit space, 60,000 industry professionals and 1,500 exhibiting companies. It is the only annual international event dedicated to the commercial concrete and masonry construction markets featuring leading industry suppliers showcasing the latest and greatest in new products, technology and innovation.

A team of A.H. Harrisand Kenseal Construction Products, A Division of A.H. Harris representatives flew to Las Vegas last week to network and learn about the most cutting-edge solutions in the marketplace at the World of Concrete. The events commenced with the International Concrete Repair Institute (ICRI) Kick-Off Party, which welcomed tradeshow attendees to Rio Hotel’s Voodoo Lounge. With a bird’s eye view of the Las Vegas Strip, the venue set the tone for the rest of the weekIMG_1807.jpg providing ample collaboration and celebration opportunities. Chris Lippmann, leader of Business Development at Kenseal, was elected as Vice President of ICRI earlier this year and Kenseal was a proud sponsor of the Kick-Off Party supporting Chris in his endeavors and the association as a whole.

Chris shares, “World of Concrete is more than just a product and equipment showcase. It is a time of year when industry leaders come together and strategize for the year ahead. The networking at the show and off-site meetings with vendors and networking groups allow you to feel the pulse of our markets. This year I could not be more excited with the discussions I had with our customers and vendors, especially those at the ICRI Kick-Off Event.”

Tuesday brought the opening of the exhibit halls and many educational programs, seminars and training workshops at World of Concrete. With three halls (North, South and Central) and two outdoor exhibit areas, there was a lot of ground to cover! Our team spent the day perusing the displays, catching up with vendors and discovering the latest to hit the industry.IMG_4362.jpg

Mike O’Connor, Kenseal’s Director of Sales for the Metro New York region, explains, “Having just returned from my first trip to World of Concrete I can certainly see what all the fuss is about. It was great to see new developments among the products we sell while at the same time getting a first hand look at new lines that will allow us to expand our offerings. One day at the expo is worth a month of web searches, meetings and emails trying to gather the same information. Equally valuable was the opportunity to connect with our customers and manufacturers. As a distributor we are the bridge between the two and time spent at the conference helped me to connect those two sides of our business, allowing me to focus on how I can best serve each one.”

The show proved to be a great experience for all in attendance! To celebrate, Kenseal hosted a hospitality event following conclusion of day one on Tuesday evening. Nearly 100 valued customers and manufacturer partners joined the A.H. Harris and Kenseal team at the Westgate resort for drinks and appetizers to unwind. The energy and enthusiasm in the room was contagious as everyone enjoyed one another’s company.

Here’s what Kevin Cocuzzo, Kenseal Inside Sales Representative in Boston, had  to say about the evening, “The World of Concrete was a stellar experience, through and through. One of my most memorable moments would have to be our Kenseal Hospitality Event. It created an organic and unique opportunity to connect with customers, vendors and colleagues that cannot be replicated.” Thank you to all those who attended the event and we hope to see you again next year!

One of the most memorial hospitatlity suites Liza, Marketing Manager, A.H. Harris attended was hosted by Husqvarana at the very popular, ‘Brooklyn Bowl’. With hundreds of customers and vendors in attendance, it was a night to remember. Our Harris team had a blast connecting with BJ Jager, Husqvarna’s National Account Manager over a nice round of bowling!

The rest of our time spent in Vegas included returning to the exhibit halls, attending vendor meetings, dinners and hospitality events and networking with like-minded industry professionals.

Kim Corwin, President & Chief Executive Officer A.H. Harris & Sons,  wraps it up for us sharing, “I attended the 4-day event in Las Vegas last week and overall the crowd (contractors, vendors, other distributors) were extremely optimistic about 2017, but also a tad cautious. The first 90-days of President Trump could influence that optimism both positively with infrastructure or negatively with uncertainty and change.”

World of Concrete is always a great way to start and focus on the year ahead!

Between A.H. Harris and our sub-divisions HarMac & Kenseal, we had close to 30 team members attend this years event. We posted some pictures on our Facebook page, you can access the album here. Over the years, the event has gotten bigger and better. Some more info can be found on their official WoC website. As always, your feedback is welcome!
